Joseph E. Miller, 81, Altoona, died Thursday at UPMC Altoona after an extended illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph C. and Ruth Elizabeth (Sandrus) Miller. On July 7, 1958, he married Donna J. Dale at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona. She preceded him in death April 11, 2020.

Surviving are three children: Joseph Richard (Deborah) Miller of York, Mary Jo Smith of Altoona and Dale Edward (Kelly) Miller of Mooresville, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Timothy Smith; and a stepbrother, William Sandrus. He was the last of his immediate family.

Joe was a 1957 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Saint Francis College. He retired in 1998 as a safety supervisor at Penelec, Altoona, with 30 years of service. He was a member of Simpson Temple United Parish, Altoona.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, especially Lucas, and hunting and fishing.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend committal rites at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona, the Rev. Denise Arpino officiating. Masks will be required.
