Obituary

Phyllis (Wright) Barnes, 96, of Altoona entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 7, 2026, at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness. She was born in Newry, PA, daughter of the Late Eugene and Edith (Leonard) Thompson. After sharing 49 years of marriage with Jesse Wright, he preceded her in death in 1996. In 2001, she married Thomas Barnes, who preceded her in death in 2015. Survived by her six children: Patricia Drexler (Edward), Barbara Babiak (Michael), Connie Wright, Thomas Wright (Cheryl), Steven Wright, and Theresa Moore (Maxwell) and two stepdaughters Susan Barnes and Joy Flanigan (Roger). She was blessed with eight grandchildren: Karen, Diane, Ben, Marcus, Miranda, Megan, Maxwell and Kaitlyn, eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Also surviving is her sister, Rita Rightnour and a special sister-in-law Charlene Thompson. She was preceded in death by eight siblings: Audrey Hofer, Roger, Francis, James, Joseph, Eugene, Raymond, Paul and Donald and three stepsons: Richard, Thomas and Eric Barnes. Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and Mercy School of Nursing in 1951. She retired from Mercy Hospital in 1994. She was active in Catholic Nurses and Our Lady of Lourdes Christian Mothers. She was a devoted supporter of the Mishler Theater and many other charities. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at Noon with Father James Dugan, celebrant on Saturday April 18, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Ave, Altoona, PA 16601. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to OLOL Christian Mothers or Tunnel for Towers.
